The Non-Profit Role in Urban Revitalization

Richard R. Buery, Jr, President and CEO of The Children's Aid Society, delivered a speech entitled "The Non-Profit Role in Urban Revitalization". The mission of the Children's Aid Society is to help children in poverty to succeed and thrive. They do this by providing comprehensive supports to children and their families in targeted high-needs New York City neighborhoods. The lecture was co-sponsored with The Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy (CLOSUP), and Students of Color in Public Policy.

Presentation by Gregory Boyle, Founder of Homeboy Industries

Father Gregory Boyle started Homeboy Industries, an innovative nonprofit corporation in L.A. that runs several smaller businesses that employ former gang members and at-risk youth. With taglines like "nothing stops a bullet like a job," profits generated through the social enterprises offset free community services such as mental therapy for gang members, housing assistance, job counseling, and tattoo removal. Kellogg Foundation, William Moses, Program Director, Kresge Foundation and Randy Ross, Manager of Philanthropic Services, for the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan. The discussion included the various types of foundations, positions within foundations, career paths, and suggestions for students considering this field. Co-sponsored by the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and the Nonprofit and Public Management Center.

Facilitators Paula Wishart and Marianne Clauw discussed effective ways to negotiate your next position to ensure that you receive the best salary and benefits package you can. Paula Wishart is a career consultant at the University of Michigan's Career Center with over 20 years experience in career coaching and counseling. She has been delivering talks on negotiation for the past 8 years and has recruiting experience in both the public and private sector. Marianne Clauw is a nonprofit management consultant and the executive director of the Kenyan Urithi Educational Fund, www.kuef.org, a 501 (3) agency supporting schools in Kenya. She has served as the Director of the BoardConnect programs at Nonprofit Enterprise at Work (NEW) in Ann Arbor and is currently the Board Chair of the Friends of CASA.
