Self-Directed Internship Opportunities
The Nonprofit and Public Management Center provides internship support for students pursuing graduate degrees in the schools of Business, Public Policy and Social Work. Each spring NPM awards stipends to graduate students who will be serving summer internships in nonprofit and public management positions.
Internship Support Awardees for 2008
The Nonprofit and Public Management Center is pleased to support the following students who served internships in nonprofit and public organizations during the summer of 2008.
From the School of Social Work:
Lindsay Bacon, an MSW student, will be involved in public policy development and evaluation for the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging. OSA is the state unit on aging and administers federal and state funds for older adult programs.
Emily Farber, an MSW student, is working in the areas of needs assessments, program coordination, development, and evaluation for Hannan Foundation. Hannan Foundation owns and operates Hannan House, Detroit's only multi-tenant nonprofit center for organizations that serve older adults.
Amanda Garratt, an MSW student, will intern with The International Resources Group (IRG), an international professional service agency that provides extensive skills to non-industrialized nations in natural resources management and the environment. Its mission is to help governments, the private sector, communities, and households manage critical resources to build a cleaner, safer and more prosperous world. The IRG is recognized as a world leader in environmental policy, and won the 2004 award for Government Contractor of the Year.
Kelly McKenzie, an MSW/MBA student, is working for the Michigan Prisoner Reentry Initiative (MPRI), which is a nonprofit program designed to help former prisoners reintegrate back into the community by connecting them with the services and supports they need. By addressing the human service needs of ex-offenders, MPRI aims to prevent vulnerable individuals from committing new crimes and returning to prison.
Rebecca Reed, an MSW student, is interning with the Corporation for a Skilled Workforce. CSW is a national, non-profit policy research and practice organization located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. CSW's mission is to re-imagine everything about work and learning in the global community for the prosperity of people, firms and communities.
Jessica Rosenberg, an MPP/MSW student, is working with the University of Michigan School of Social Work's Good Neighborhoods Technical Assistance Center. TAC is a principle partner of the Skillman Foundation's investment in six Detroit neighborhoods where roughly 30 percent of the city's children live. The organization serves as a consultant to neighborhood groups, nonprofit organizations and the Skillman Foundation by providing research and analysis of key community issues and by developing resources, workshops and conferences to examine action options and policy alternatives.
MeShon Watkins, an MSW student, is implementing and executing a program to teach young people to become community organizers in their communities throughout the Mississippi River Delta for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Mississippi. The ACLU works in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States.
From the Ross School of Business:
Alexandra Steele, an MBA student, will work with Education Pioneers, a human capital organization focused on attracting and developing talented leaders from different disciplines to improve and transform K-12 education, specifically in urban areas. It operates a best-in-class summer fellowship program that provides high-performing business, education, law, and public policy students an opportunity to work with its partner organizations in urban areas throughout the country while helping students develop the skills, knowledge and network to launch careers in education after school.
From the Ford School of Public Policy:
Laila Bernstein, an MPP/MSW student, is working with the executive director of the Massachusetts Interagency Council on Homelessness, creating a proposal for a pilot network, developing the strategic plan, and designing organizational structure for cross agency workgroups throughout Massachusetts.
Yiwei Chen, an MPP/MSW student, will assist the Nonprofit Enterprises at Work's (NEW) CEO to develop and formalize the procedure and governance of the board trustee as well as the development of various fundraising events. NEW's mission is to provide solutions for successful nonprofit management.
Elaine Denny, an MPP student, will be creating reports on human rights issues within the United States for Amnesty International. Amnesty International undertakes research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights.
Miao Qing, an MPP/MSW student, will assist in preparation and coordination of the U.S. Foreign Policy Colloquium for the National Committee on United States-China Relations. The FPC is a program jointly launched by the National Committee and the George Washington University to help Chinese graduate students better understand American foreign policy. The National Committee on United States-China Relations is a nonprofit established in 1966 promoting understanding and cooperation between the US and Greater China.
